Sy Liebergot ist eine lebende Legende. Obwohl Sy Liebergot an den spannenden Missionen von Apollo 8 und Apollo 11 beteiligt war, ist vor allem seine Zeit als Flight Controller (EECOM) der Mission Apollo 13 bekannt. 55 Stunden und 54 Minuten nach dem Start, mehr als 300.000 km von der Erde entfernt, explodierte einer der beiden Sauerstoffflaschen im Apollo-Raumschiff «Odyssee». Plötzlich zeigten seine Instrumente auf den Bildschirmen unzählige Fehler an – so viele, dass es sich aus seiner Sicht nur um eine Fehlfunktion der Konsole handeln konnte. Bald zeigte sich aber, dass sich eine Katastrophe ereignet hatte und die Crew von Apollo 13 in Lebensgefahr schwebte. Das Raumschiff raste weiter in Richtung  Mond, doch die Lebenserhaltungssysteme der Kommandokapsel würden in weniger als drei Stunden den Geist aufgeben.

Sy Liebergot war einer der Flight Controller, die zu diesem Zeitpunkt Dienst hatten. Zusammen mit seinen Kollegen arbeitete Liebergot unter Hochdruck daran, eine Lösung für die scheinbar unlösbare Situation zu finden. Ihm und seinen Kameraden in Mission Controll ist es zu verdanken, das die drei Astronauten heil zur Erde zurückkehren und sicher landen konnten.

Sy Liebergot war nicht nur NASA Flight Controller in der Zeit der Apollo-Mondflüge. Er hat auch die Skylab- und die Apollo-Soyuz-Mission begleitet. Später arbeitete er für das Space-Shuttle- und das ISS-Programm.

Sy Liebergot is a living legend. Even though his Apollo experience included the exciting missions of Apollo 8 and Apollo 11, Apollo 13 became an unwelcome highlight of his flight controller (EECOM) career. 55 hours and 54 minutes after the launch, more than 300,000 km from Earth, exploded one of the two oxygen tanks in the Service Module of the «Odyssey». The multiple failures that flashed across his Mission Control console screens seemed far too overwhelming to be anything but instrumentation failure, and Sy was the first to suggest as much. He was also the flight controller into whose lap had been dumped the catastrophe that was suddenly unfolding – that the spacecraft and its crew, hurtling in the wrong direction, had less than three hours of life left in their Command and Service Module spacecraft.

Sy Liebergot was one of the flight controllers who were on duty at that time. Together with his colleagues Liebergot worked under high pressure to find a solution to the seemingly intractable situation. It’s his and his comrades work in Mission Control which made it possible to bring the three astronauts back safe.

Sy Liebergot was not only NASA flight controller at the time of the Apollo moon flights. He has also accompanied the Skylab and Apollo-Soyuz mission. Later he worked for the Space Shuttle and the ISS program.
