Space Chat mit Kelvin Manning, NASA Kennedy Space Center

Das Kennedy Space Center KSC in Florida ist wohl der wichtigste Weltraum-Bahnhof der Welt. Von hier sind die berühmten Apollo-Mondmissionen und die Space-Shuttle-Missionen gestartet worden.

Seit geraumer Zeit befindet sich das KSC in einem Wandel. Verschiedene private Unternehmen wie SpaceX und Blue Origin sind hier eingezogen. Und im verlauf der letzten Jahre sind hier bemerkenswerte Missionen gestartet worden.

Im Februar 2018 ist die erste Falcon-Heavy-Rakete abgehoben; die Nutzlast war ein Tesla-Roadster, und die beiden Seiten-Stufen sind zum Cape zurückgekehrt und synchron gelandet. Raumsonden wie der Solar Orbiter oder Mars2020 sind von hier aus ins All geschickt worden, um unser Wissen zu erweitern. Und erst kürzlich sind – nach fast 10 Jahren Unterbruch – mit einer Falcon 9 Astronauten in einer Crew-Dragon-Kapsel von amerikanischen Boden aus zur ISS gestartet. Derweil wird in einem grossen Gebäude des KSC die Orion-Kapsel fertiggebaut, die in wenigen Jahren im Rahmen der Artemis-Mission wieder Menschen zum Mond bringen soll.

Einer, der all diese Aktivitäten aus nächster Nähe verfolgt und dafür sorgt, dass alles reibungslos läuft, ist Kelvin Manning, Associate Director, Technical, des Kennedy Space Centers der NASA (Bild).

Das Swiss Space Museum freut sich ausserordentlich, dass Manning als Gesprächsgast für den «Online Space Chat» gewonnen werden konnte. Manning wird uns einen Einblick geben, wie sich das Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA, in den vergangen Monaten verändert hat und welche spannenden Projekte aktuell am Laufen sind.

Guido Schwarz, Gründer Swiss Space Museum, wird mit Kelvin Manning über seine faszinierende Arbeit sprechen. Selbstverständlich gibt es gegen Ende des Live-Events die Möglichkeit, Fragen zu stellen.

The Kennedy Space Center KSC in Florida is probably the most important spaceport in the world. From here the famous Apollo moon missions and the Space Shuttle missions were launched.

For some time now, the KSC has been undergoing a transformation. Various private companies such as SpaceX and Blue Origin have moved in here. And in the course of the last years, remarkable missions have been launched here.

In February 2018 the first Falcon Heavy rocket lifted off; the payload was a Tesla roadster, and the two side stages returned to the Cape and landed synchronously. Space probes such as the Solar Orbiter or Mars2020 have been sent into space from here to expand our knowledge. And just recently – after an interruption of almost 10 years – astronauts were launched from American soil on a Falcon 9 aboard a Crew Dragon capsule towards the ISS. Meanwhile, the Orion capsule is being completed in a large facility at the KSC. In a few years‘ time, the capsule will bring people back to the moon as part of the Artemis mission.

One person who is following all these activities at close range and ensuring that everything runs smoothly is Kelvin Manning, Associate Director, Technical, of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.

The Swiss Space Museum is extremely pleased to have Manning as a guest for the „Online Space Chat“. Manning will give us an insight into how the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA, has changed over the past months and what exciting projects are currently underway.

Guido Schwarz, founder of the Swiss Space Museum, will interview Kelvin Manning about his fascinating work. Of course, there will be an opportunity to ask questions towards the end of the live event.
